Peru: Law enforcement neutralizes two Shining Path members in VRAEM

The Joint Command of the Armed Forces reported that two alleged members of the terrorist organization Shining Path were killed in a clash during a military operation in Huanta, Ayacucho region, within the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM).

According to the statement, the operation was carried out on March 29, 2026, in the Pampa Aurora sector, in Huanta.

It involved the participation of the Joint Special Forces, the VRAEM Special Command, the Peruvian National Police (Anti-Terrorism and Anti-Drug Divisions), and the Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Office).

As a result of this operation, a clash occurred in which alias "David," an alleged full member of Shining Path's Central Committee, and alias "Ramirez" were killed.

Additionally, the seizure of a 7.62 mm MAG machine gun and a .22 caliber rifle was reported.

"The patrols continue to intensify operations against terrorist columns in the region. The Joint Command of the Armed Forces reaffirms its commitment to continue reporting on the progress of operations and commends the participating personnel for their commitment, courage, and spirit of service, reaffirming its mission to guarantee territorial integrity and public security," the statement reads.

Finally, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces reaffirmed that these actions are carried out in compliance with current legislation, with respect for human rights and international humanitarian law.
