Piero Corvetto has submitted his resignation letter from the post of head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), a document presented to the National Justice Board (JNJ).

"I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign from the post of head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), a responsibility I have held since August 31, 2020," the letter addressed to JNJ Chairwoman Maria Teresa Cabrera said.

Corvetto stated that operational technical problems arose during the deployment of electoral materials in certain areas of Metropolitan Lima on election day, April 12.

With the processing of records nearing completion, "I consider it necessary and unavoidable to resign from the responsibility entrusted to me."

"I have carried out my duties with integrity. I had long prepared myself for the post I competed for, and in which we were able to manage a strong process of necessary reforms, but the localized problems that occurred on April 12 constitute a situation that prevents me from remaining in office," he wrote.

Corvetto added that answers may be sought regarding the organization's internal operations.

He said there also remain questions that will have to be clarified "through an impartial and exhaustive investigation."

"I hope my resignation helps generate a climate of greater confidence toward the elections. I am sure that whoever succeeds me will help build an appropriate political environment for the successful holding of the presidential runoff," he added.

In his resignation letter, Corvetto stated that preparations for the second round have already begun.

He said that only a few weeks remain before it is held.

"In that context, I request that my resignation be accepted as soon as possible, as citizens and political actors require certainty regarding our immediate future. I also wish to express my full willingness to cooperate with any investigations in the appropriate jurisdictions, in order to fully contribute to clarifying the facts," he indicated.
