Peru and Hong Kong might sign FTA in Nov 2024

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo announced that Peru and Hong Kong are expected to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in November of this year.

"During the APEC event held in Arequipa (last May), we delivered good news, because we completed negotiating the substantive part of the treaty we were negotiating with Hong Kong," Galdo told Andina News Agency.

"At this moment, we are making minor adjustments; in November, that treaty can be signed with the benefits it means for exports and international trade," she added.

The government official announced that the Peru-Indonesia future trade agreement is also advancing. She indicated that negotiations could be completed next November during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit to be hosted by Peru.

"We are (engaged) in negotiations with Indonesia, a country hosting 350 million inhabitants, which is interested in reaching an agreement within the framework of APEC in November," she mentioned.

"The agreement will be signed in November, but reaching a substantial completion is crucial because this agreement has been negotiated for about six years, with a hiatus during the pandemic when travel was restricted. Nevertheless, it is a significant achievement as it will offer many benefits," she explained.

The Cabinet member also reminded citizens that APEC is a forum of 21 economies whose purpose is commercial and economic integration.

"We already have 14 agreements signed with those economies, and soon these will be 16," she stated.
