The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, stated that he will request legislative powers from Congress to foster measures aimed at strengthening the fight against citizen insecurity and confronting organized crime more effectively.

The Head of State made this statement during a meeting held at the Government Palace with mayors of Metropolitan Lima on Wednesday.

The top official coordinated joint actions with them aimed at improving security strategies and strengthening the Peruvian State's response to crime.

"I am considering requesting legislative powers from Congress to boost the fight against citizen insecurity by providing greater tools to the National Police so it can combat criminal organizations," he said.

During the meeting, the Head of State explained that his government is evaluating various legal reforms aimed at improving the fight against crime, including strengthening the police's role in criminal investigations.

"We plan to modify the laws so the National Police always has the main role in criminal investigations and is in charge of the entire preliminary phase," he pointed out.

Within this framework, the President called on mayors to maintain joint work to strengthen public policies on security and announced new coordination meetings.

"I invite you to meet again soon to review the national security plan we are crafting. That work must be carried out with the collaboration of you and all the authorities committed to the country's security," he said.

On the other hand, the top official warned that organized crime has surpassed the traditional limits of national jurisdictions, which requires stronger and more coordinated legal responses.

"Organized crime has overflowed every concept of nation that once existed. Therefore, legislation must allow these crimes to be confronted as threats against the State and against national security," he stated.

The President thanked the mayors for their presence.

He also highlighted the importance of direct dialogue with local authorities to identify the population's main needs.

"Thank you for coming and for the proposals that have been presented. We have always said that our policy is dialogue, and dialogue with the real actors, in this case with those who execute the budget and are close to residents, which are the municipalities," he noted.

Finally, the President stated that coordinated work involving the Executive Branch and local governments constitutes a fundamental tool to address the problems affecting citizens.

"There is no greater democracy than this: having contact with the real neighbors through you," he told the municipal authorities.
