The Organization of American States (OAS) Electoral Observation Mission praised Peru for the organization of the electoral process to be held this Sunday, April 12, highlighting strong coordination, as well as the institutional capacity and technical solvency of electoral authorities.

This was conveyed to Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela by the OAS Electoral Observation Mission Chief Victor Rico, during a meeting held at Torre Tagle Palace in Lima on Thursday.

During the session, the OAS representative told the minister that the mission will deploy electoral observers to each of the country's regions, with the main concentration of experts in Lima due to its large share of the electorate.

He noted that OAS electoral observers will be present at selected polling places abroad, including in cities such as Santiago, Chile; Barcelona, Spain; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Washington, D.C., United States.

In turn, the minister reiterated that the Peruvian government's priority is to hold free and transparent general elections in line with international standards.

De Zela welcomed the work carried out by the OAS electoral observation mission and emphasized its key role in promoting transparency and trust in the process.

He stated that the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Peruvian government will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the proper fulfillment of the mission's mandate.

The deployment of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission for the 2026 General Elections follows an invitation issued by the National Elections Board (JNE) and channeled by the Peruvian government through the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The initiative aims to strengthen democracy and public confidence in electoral processes.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.

This electoral process will allow citizens to go to the polls to choose the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament.
