With the aim of promoting better sustainable use of the
Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, the government will update the study of its carrying capacity to establish appropriate development strategies and policies that enhance the experience of both domestic and international tourists.
"(Following the signing of this agreement), the three sectors will work together to determine the actual carrying capacity of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, providing all the necessary tools to establish development strategies and policies, as well as promote better sustainable use of this cultural wonder," Minister Mera stated.
It is important to note that the new study —to be funded by Mincetur at a cost of S/1.8 million (about US$533,807)— will update the information gathered by a previous study conducted in 2015.

Agreements reached
As part of the established commitments, the three entities must designate their representatives for coordination, technical meetings, workshops, and field visits required for the preparation of this study, with the aim of enhancing the experience of both domestic and foreign tourists.
Mincetur will be responsible for preparing, proposing, and approving the terms of reference for the execution of said work, subject to the favorable opinion of the other two institutions involved, and for hiring the corresponding consultant.
Additionally, it must submit the reports related to the study, as well as the associated deliverables and outputs for evaluation and approval, and monitor the proper execution of the agreement.
For their part, Mincul and Sernanp must not only provide favorable opinions on the progress of the work but also facilitate access to Machu Picchu for the consultant and Mincetur specialists to gather the necessary information for preparing the study.
The Ministry of Culture commits to provide technical information on management, conservation, visitor statistics, archaeological research results, and other relevant data as well.
