Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer attended the Embassy of Uruguay in Lima to sign the Book of Condolences for the passing of former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica.

Via social media, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the Cabinet member expressed, on behalf of the Peruvian Government and people, the profound sorrow over his passing.

Jose Mujica died on May 13, at the age of 89, after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer a year earlier.

In 2010, he assumed the Presidency of the Republic of Uruguay and, rather than moving into the presidential residence, Mujica remained in his humble home alongside his wife, Lucia Topolansky.

With a life marked by politics, Mujica experienced numerous stages and moments that defined his line of thought —even after it became known that he was battling cancer.
