Lima celebrates 487th founding anniversary with over 10 million inhabitants

The population residing in the 43 districts that make up the province of Lima has reached 10,004,141 inhabitants, who account for 29.9% of the total population in Peru (33,396,698 inhabitants), the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Tuesday on the occasion of the 487th founding anniversary of the "City of Kings."

According to INEI estimates and projections on Lima's population as of June 30 this year, 52.1% of inhabitants (5,220,755) are women and 47.8% (4,783,386) are men.

When broken down by age groups, the analysis shows that 64.9% (6,493,809) of Lima's inhabitants are aged 15 to 59, 18.5% (1,850,730) are between 0 to 14 years of age, and 16.6% (1,659,602) are over 59 years old.

San Juan de Lurigancho, district with largest number of inhabitants

Out of the 43 districts that make up the City of Lima, San Juan de Lurigancho is home to the largest number of inhabitants, totaling 1,225,092 people in 2022.

Next in line is the district of San Martin de Porres (770,725), followed by Ate (702,815), Comas (586,914), Villa Maria del Triunfo (448,775). 

Meanwhile, the districts with the smallest populations are: Santa Maria del Mar (1,216), Punta Negra (8,808), and San Bartolo (9,273).
 
Inhabitants per square km

There are 3,822.9 people per square km in the province of Lima, while Surquillo is the district with the highest population density (29,605.2 inhabitants/sq. km), followed by Breña (29,561.2 inhabitants/sq. km), Pueblo Libre (22,275.8 inhabitants/sq. km), La Victoria (21,692.7 inhabitants/sq. km), and Santa Anita (21,284.4 inhabitants/sq. km).

On the other hand, the districts with the lowest population density are Punta Negra (67.5 inhabitants/sq. km), Santa Maria del Mar (124.0 inhabitants/sq. km), Cieneguilla (167.2 inhabitants/sq. km), Punta Hermosa (196.4 inhabitants/sq. km), and San Bartolo (206.0 inhabitants/sq. km).

Births

According to data provided by the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC), 95,479 births were registered between January and September 2021 in Lima.

The district with the highest number of births was San Juan de Lurigancho (11,934) and the one with the lowest number was Santa Maria del Mar (11 births).
