With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures, EsSalud warns of an increased risk of urinary tract infections, a common condition that can worsen if not detected and treated promptly.

The health agency explained that heat, humidity, and dehydration create favorable conditions for bacterial growth in the urinary tract, affecting women more frequently.

During this season, the most common urinary tract infections are cystitis, which affects the bladder and manifests as burning during urination and increased urinary frequency, and urethritis, characterized by inflammation of the urethra.

In more serious cases, the infection can spread to the kidneys and lead to pyelonephritis, a complication that requires immediate medical attention.

Valeria Linares Vega, a urologist at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital of EsSalud (Peru's Social Security Health Insurance), explained that it is common for people to become dehydrated in the summer without realizing it.

"When fluid intake decreases, urine volume is reduced, and the natural cleansing effect of the urinary tract is lost, which facilitates the accumulation and multiplication of bacteria," she noted.

The specialist added that certain seasonal habits also increase the risk, such as remaining in wet swimwear for extended periods.

"The combination of heat and humidity creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth, which increases the likelihood of urinary tract infections," she explained.

Warning signs

EsSalud recommends seeking immediate medical attention at a health facility if you experience symptoms such as burning or pain when urinating, frequent urination with small amounts of urine, lower back pain, fever, nausea, or vomiting.

"Recognizing these signs early helps prevent more serious complications," Dr. Linares emphasized.

Prevention measures

To reduce the risk of urinary tract infections during the summer, EsSalud advises changing out of swimwear immediately after leaving the sea or pool, showering, wearing cotton underwear, avoiding tight clothing, and not holding urine for extended periods.

Hydration is also key. “It is recommended to drink between 1.5 and 2.5 liters of water per day, depending on age, weight, and level of physical activity. Adequate fluid intake promotes urinary flow and helps eliminate bacteria,” the specialist indicated.

Commitment to prevention

In this context, the Executive President of EsSalud, Dr. Segundo Acho Mego, emphasized the importance of self-care during the hot season.

“Adopting healthy habits is essential to prevent common summer illnesses and protect the health of our insured members,” he stated.

EsSalud reminds the public that its health facilities are available to provide medical guidance and timely care, reaffirming its commitment to health promotion and disease prevention throughout the country.
