Peru: President Boluarte coordinates response actions to Arequipa earthquake

At a virtual meeting from Beijing, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte coordinates actions in response to the 7.0-magnitude earthquake registered in Caraveli province, Arequipa region, early on Friday.

The top official specified that the Ministerial Cabinet is on alert to address the damage caused by the seismic event.

Mrs. Boluarte noted that Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen is traveling to the aforementioned area bringing humanitarian aid.

"From this moment on, the entire Cabinet is on alert to deal with the emergency; God willing, there are no human or infrastructure losses from the aftershocks. INDECI remains in permanent communication with us, the premier, and the ministers so that we are on alert," she indicated.


"All my attention is focused on Arequipa region, especially on the earthquake epicenter. As soon as we were informed in the early hours (of Friday), we immediately contacted the premier and the ministers so they could get in contact with the region to address the earthquake," Mrs. Boluarte explained.

"Based on the information I receive from various sectors, everyone is responding immediately, in terms of healthcare, housing, and transportation," she added.

The Head of state asked specific questions about the level of damage to homes, transportation infrastructure, and power supply linked to the earthquake, and about the actions deployed to solve these issues.

Regarding the tsunami alert, the Navy informed that there were parameters indicating the possible formation of a wave, prompting the issuance of an alert. However, it was canceled at 4:45 a.m. (local time) after continuous monitoring.

The top official asked the population to continue remaining calm, as well as united as a family to deal with this emergency.

"My heartfelt embrace; we are monitoring what is happening in our beloved homeland and addressing any needs that may arise," she expressed.

The INDECI head informed the president that six aftershocks were registered. In turn, the nine injured citizens were already provided medical attention and discharged.

Regarding material damage, a collapsed bridge has been reported.

Urcariegui specified that humanitarian aid is being delivered by air to the zone. He added that Armed Forces personnel have been deployed to assist the population.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Arequipa region early on Friday and was felt across the entire central coast of Peru.

According to the National Seismological Center report, the earthquake occurred at 00:36:27 on June 28, at a depth of 42 km and 54 km southwest (SW) of Yauca in Caraveli province, Arequipa region.
