The remains of 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Mario Vargas Llosa arrived on Monday afternoon at the Army's Funeral and Cremation Center in Lima's Surco district, where they were cremated in accordance with his final wishes.

The funeral procession departed at 4:10 p.m. (local time) from his residence in the capital city's Barranco district, less than 24 hours after his death was announced.

The body of the writer —who passed away at the age of 89 last Sunday— was waked in strict privacy starting this morning, with the presence of his family and close friends.

Alvaro Vargas Llosa —the novelist's son— today asked the media gathered outside their home and the public to respect that privacy.

"We have agreed to go through this mourning privately, which is why we are holding the wake at home rather than in a public place," he said hours before the transfer of the body.

The acclaimed man of letters departed this world in peace, surrounded by his loved ones, said his son Alvaro, who had announced the news on social media.
