The Director General for Peruvian Communities Abroad and Consular Affairs, Ambassador Pedro Bravo, reported on Monday that 114 consular offices abroad are authorized to organize the 2026 General Elections, scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 12.

The diplomat specified that "there are 114 consular offices across the five continents receiving documentation, ballots in particular, to organize elections for nearly 5% of the electorate, namely voters abroad."

The official told RPP Noticias that this deployment covers 199 cities, 207 polling places, and 2,497 polling stations.

Physical DNI will be mandatory

In addition, the ambassador emphasized that Peruvians abroad must present their physical National Identity Document (DNI) to vote.

In that regard, he clarified that "voting always requires a DNI; people cannot vote with a passport. If you had your DNI and lost it, do not have it physically, or left it at home, you will not be allowed to vote."

Key aspects of the electoral process

Regarding organization, the ambassador indicated that training of polling station members abroad has progressed ahead of schedule, with the aim of exceeding 60% to 70% of trained personnel.

The diplomat added that, unlike in previous processes, ballots will not be destroyed after the elections; by legal mandate, they will be sent to Peru along with the electoral records, accompanied by a consular official.

Regarding elections in some countries, he specified that no voting will be held in Venezuela, while elections in Mexico and Cuba will proceed as normal.

In countries near the Middle East conflict, such as Egypt and Türkiye, security measures will be adopted, while no voting will take place in Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, or Ukraine. In the latter case, polling stations will be set up in Poland.

Finally, he reported that following the elections on April 12, electoral materials will gradually arrive in Peru between April 13 and 17, depending on each country’s air connectivity conditions.
