11:24 | Lima, Aug. 13.

Peruvian Prime Minister Walter Martos called on citizens to be responsible for complying with the measures decreed by the Government in order to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

"I call on all citizens to be responsible because no matter what measures the Government takes, if citizens assume no responsibility, it will be impossible to fight the pandemic," the Cabinet chief told ATV Noticias TV show.

In this respect, he emphasized that family and social gatherings are completely banned as it has been found out that these activities have promoted COVID-19 infection.

"I call on the population to assume responsibility and refrain from visiting their relatives for their own safety at this time when infections are increasing," Martos stated.

On Wednesday afternoon, in a televised address to the nation, President Martin Vizcarra announced the return of mandatory social immobilization on Sundays due to a rebound in COVID-19 infections in Peru.

It must be noted that —during the mandatory social immobilization— strictly necessary personnel, who participate in the provision of food supply, health, financial and restaurant services for home delivery, will be exempted from the measure.

Additionally, the Government has approved a supreme decree that declares quarantine entirely focused on six (6) regions of the country: Arequipa, Ica, Huanuco, Junin, Madre de Dios and San Martin, as well as on 36 provinces, to curb the spread of the pandemic.
