Peru, India to begin FTA negotiations in June

Peruvian and Indian governments will begin FTA negotiation rounds in June, Peru's Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Edgar Vasquez informed on Wednesday.

The announcement was made from New Delhi (India), where both countries held the first technical meetings to establish the terms of reference for the said negotiations. 

These would address tariffs, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, investments, trade of services, movement of people and cooperation, among other topics.

Following the first round of negotiations, to be held in Lima, a Peruvian delegation will travel to the Asian nation in September to continue with the process. 

New Delhi agenda

Deputy Minister Vasquez has been carrying out a series of key trade promotion activities in India since March 6.  

The government official met with India's Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia, to whom he reiterated the relevance, opportunities and benefits of an eventual Peru-India FTA. 

Vasquez also met with Indian entrepreneurs to promote the Inca nation's trade and investment opportunities. 

Likewise, he met with representatives of the Indian Importers Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IICCI); the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO); the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry; as well as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Citrus fruit access

On the other hand, the foreign trade authority discussed market access facilitation for Peruvian agro-exports with India's Agriculture Secretary Shri S. K. Pattanayak.

The dialogue mainly focused on access for tangerines and blueberries.

"Superfoods Peru" in India

Promotion activities also included the presentation of the "Superfoods Peru" brand in India during the AAHAR 2017 International Food and Hospitality Fair.

The event featured India's Food Processing Industries Minister Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, as well as Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Vasquez.
