Peru's opposition-led Congress passed the censure motion against Education Minister Jaime Saavedra.

Thus, Saavedra is obliged to resign within the next 72 hours.

Lawmakers passed the motion with 78 votes in favor — mostly from majoritarian party known as Fuerza Popular, zero against and none abstentions.

Members of Peruanos por el Kambio and Frente Amplio parties opted to leave Congress facilities prior to voting the measure.

The censure against Minister Saavedra was grounded in alleged corruption acts in the procurement of computers and delays in the execution of infrastructure works for Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

Said motion was put to vote by Congress Chairwoman Luz Salgado following a long debate.

Approval of the censure was deemed as "unfair" and "irresponsible" by Prime Minister Fernando Zavala.

"The country must prevail over other interests. Thank you, Jaime [Saavedra], for the progress made. The reform will continue," Zavala posted on Twitter.
