The Government of the United States confirmed its support to fighting transnational crime, illegal logging, ecological crime and drug trafficking, U.S. Ambassador to Peru Krishna R. Urs said at a meeting with Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Hernandez on Tuesday.
The authorities agreed to join efforts so as to implement mechanisms for verifying whether the wood brought into the market is of legal origin.
"There are several mechanisms to control its legal use, from stamping papers to using a software acquired and transferred by the United States, for which we are trained," Minister Hernandez said.
"Adjustments and adaptations to our conditions are being made, for it [the software] to operate properly," he pointed out.
In this sense, the diplomat said his country is willing to work with Peru to improve the forestry sector and fight these kinds of illegalities.
On the other hand, Hernandez indicated senior officials and regional governments will be trained to ensure an adequate traceability, origin and destination control of the legal wood.
The meeting was also attended by Serfor's Executive Director John Leigh Vetter and Secretary General Oscar Gomez Castro, among other authorities.
