President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Friday shared his administration's efforts to combat gender-based violence while giving an overview of his first year in office.

"As a country, we must tackle violence against women," he underlined during his presidential speech on the occasion of Peru's 196th Independence Day anniversary.

The Head of State referred to the Inca nation's poor indicators in this respect.

"The fact that Peru records one femicide —or attempted femicide— a day, and that we post the world's third-highest number of per-capita rape cases is outrageous," the leader regretted.

"We have thus strengthened protection for women. They can now access assistance and counseling 24 hours a day by calling 100 [helpline]," he indicated.

Pro-women measures also included the implementation of Peru's first 25 "Women Emergency Centers" in police stations, which the government "expects to double before the year comes to an end."

"I hereby clearly tell you that women's fight is also my fight!," he pointed out.

Discrimination

Similarly, Mr. Kuczynski reiterated his government's commitment to fighting discrimination in all its forms.

"Particularly racism, a scourge that prevents us from becoming the modern country all Peruvians deserve," he pointed out.
