Peruvian superfood exports show sustained growth

Peruvian superfood exports experience sustained growth, showing 9% rise to US$2.942 billion in sales last year, Association of Peruvian Exporters (ADEX) reported.

In light of the current healthy eating trend, Adex Institute young entrepreneurs will be exhibiting over 80 value-added superfood products during the 24th edition of Feriadex that runs until June 18 in Lima.

The most demanded superfoods are quinoa, kiwicha, cañihua, maca, yacon, chestnuts, carob, sacha inchi, purple corn, camu camu, anchovy and its derivatives, among others.

Shipments reached US$1.567 billion in 2012, US$1.924 billion in 2013, US$2.490 billion in 2014 and 2.689 billion in 2015.

Peruvian superfoods' top destination in 2016 was the United States, totaling US$1.050 billion, up by 12% over a year ago.

Other important destinations included the Netherlands (US$557 million), the United Kingdom (US$241 million) and Spain (174 million).

The fair displays products like nuña snacks, 'pota' squid nuggets, instant drink mix of quinoa and kiwicha, frozen trout filet, quinoa cereal with aguaymanto and strawberry pieces, pisco-maca cream and pisco-soursop cream.
