The Great Military Parade has been one of the most symbolic activities held as part of Independence Day celebrations in Peru over time.

Here are some images of such momentous event in Peru's history. Pictures have been kept in the files of El Peruano official gazette.

Since the late 19th century, the parade has raised a lot of expectations in the population who, year after year, gathers in the capital city.

In the beginning, Peruvian Armed Forces were considered the main attraction of the parade.

Later, other important actors in the society like the National Police, school students and firefighters joined the patriotic act.

A few people may remember that military parades used to be held at Plaza Mayor (Lima's Main Square) until 1939.

It was not until the next year that they moved to the iconic park Campo de Marte at the site of the former Santa Beatriz racecourse.

In 1956, modern Army aircraft flew over Santa Beatriz green areas in the presence of enthusiastic attendees, mainly men.

Such place was crowded with military officers and non-commissioned officers until 1960.

In 1974, the traditional parade moved to Brasil Avenue.

However, various years later, in 1987, Lima's Main Square was chosen to host the event again.

When Fujimori took office, the parade was held both at Campo de Marte and on Brasil Avenue.

The popular event was canceled when he resigned in 2000.

Another cancellation occurred back in 2009 when the H1N1 pandemic was sweeping the globe.

It must be noted Brasil Avenue was the only place that witnessed the event under Humala's administration.

Finally, this is the second time President Kuczynski attends the event within the framework of Peru's Independence Day celebrations.
