Peruvian grandmaster Julio Granda was named senior chess champion at the World Senior Chess Championship held in Italy.

After eight rounds, Granda and Vlastimil Jansa led the 50+ and 65+ sections, respectively. The Peruvian was the only one who earned 7/8 points in his category.

On the other hand, Elvira Berend is the first seed in the +50 women's championship with 6,5/7 points.

In the 65+ championship, Tamar Khmiadashvili and Nona Gaprindashvili shared the top spot with 5,5/7 points.

"We are proud of you, thank you for winning so many titles for Peru. You are great, dad," his daughter Lereyda Granda posted on Twitter.

According to the World Chess Federation (FIDE), Granda is among the top 50 chess players in the world and the best one in Peru.

In 1986, he was awarded the Grandmaster tittle by the said international body.

Granda took advantage of the occasion to comment on the discipline's situation in Peru, noting youth participation at major international tournaments.

He believes there is a lot of potential in the country and expects support to encourage chess development as well.
