Peru's fisheries sector achieved a 20.96% growth last April over the previous twelve-month period, Peru's National Fisheries Society (SNP) reported.

Said industry keeps on reverting the negative figures recorded last year.

Fisheries' performance stood out among other sectors in Jan-Apr period 2017, thus posting a positive growth rate of 51%, and weakening part of the growth in other economic activities.

Fishing contributed 0.24 percentage points to April's GDP growth of 0.17%.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), fisheries' output recorded a staggering 101.01% rise in the fourth month, driven by a 112.12% increase in marine fish catch.

As for marine fishing, catches of indirect human consumption species, mainly of anchovy, saw a significant increase at the beginning of the first fishing season in the center-north area.

Anchovy catch saw a 1,860% rise, considering the landing of 382,660 tons.

Main landing ports of anchovy in the center-north area were Chimbote, Chicama, Pisco, Chancay and Supe.

Those in the South included Ilo, Matarani and Planchada, which contributed to the cities' improved economic performance, previously hit by Coastal El Niño event.
