Peru's farming sector expanded 3.1% last September over the same month in 2016, underpinned by greater output of agriculture products (1.5%) and live animals (5%), Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) informed.
According to Minagri, the increase registered in agriculture constitutes Peru's third-most important expansion so far this year, after seeing growth rates of 9.0% in July and 6.4% in June, despite
Coastal El Niño impacts last summer.
In this sense, the agriculture subsector saw a 1.5% rise mainly supported by greater production of wheat (59%; in La Libertad and Cajamarca regions), potato (42%; in Ica, Arequipa and Huancavelica), cacao (33%; in San Martin and Ucayali), and paddy rice (17%; in San Martin and Ucayali).
Production of yuca (14%; in Pasco, Amazonas
and Lima), parchment coffee (13%; in Junin, Ayacucho and Huanuco),
blueberries (12%; in Lambayeque and La Libertad), and sugar cane (11%; in Lambayeque and Lima) contributed to said expansion, too.
Livestock
In the analyzed month, production of live animals and animal-derived products registered a 5.0% growth if compared to the same month last year.
This subsector was mainly boosted by increased production of broiler chickens (8%; in Lima, La Libertad and Arequipa), raw milk (3%; in Lima, Amazonas and Ica), pork (5%; in Lima and La Libertad), and chicken eggs (2%; in Lima and Ica).
First nine months
On the other hand, Minagri reported the
farming sector went up 1.6% in Jan-Sept over the same period in 2016.
In the said period, agricultural output climbed 0.9%, while that of live animals and animal-derived products rose 2.7%.
Finally, Minagri added farming is projected to grow around 2.7% this year.
