Canadian firms together invested US$9.3 billion in exploitation and exploration across large- and medium-sized mining operations in Peru, Canadian Ambassador to Lima Gwyneth Kutz said.
Kutz disclosed the Government of Canada is looking to invest US$950 million —in the next five years— in the development of "mining superclusters" —consortiums comprising mining companies, technology centers, universities and the State, with the aim of promoting technological innovation.
Furthermore,
Canada plans to use new technology so as to improve productivity, reduce costs, increase security and mitigate negative impacts, thus resulting in safe, sustainable and competitive mines.
Speaking on the third day of Perumin, the Canadian diplomat stressed that mining creates 1.8 million direct jobs per year.
The first International Meeting was inaugurated by Foreign Affairs Ministry's Economic Promotion Office Director Silvia Alfaro, who believes the State and business sector should give a clearer picture of mining's positive contribution.
