Economy and Finance Ministry (MEF) affirms the worst has passed for Peruvian economy, despite "Coastal El Niño" and works that came to a halt; thus it will see a 2% expansion in the second quarter.

According to MEF, the economy saw positive growth in April despite impacts caused by Coastal El Niño phenomenon, stopped works linked to Brazilian firms, and two working days less during Holy Week, compared to the same month last year.

Each working day is equivalent to about 0.5 point of GDP.

The Ministry underscored the strong positive growth in the fisheries sector (100%), driven by the great start of the fishing season in the center-north area.

In this sense, Peru's economy is believed to have grown by around 2% in the second quarter of the year.

Even though the forecast for GDP growth in 2017's second quarter is similar to that of the previous three-month period, the economic activity might result in further acceleration, posting a growth rate of about 3.5% in June.

On the other hand, maintenance spending and public investment are expected to grow 16% and 15%, respectively, with economic activity rates up to more than 4% during the second half of the year.

Moreover, the central government's public investment saw a nominal growth of 27% over the first 12 days of June from the same period in 2016.
