Teacher performance assessments are an essential part of education reform and cannot be omitted, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala affirmed while chairing the National Agreement's extraordinary session on education issues Thursday.

Thus, the omission of said process is not negotiable as expected by a group of teachers currently on strike.

The also Economy and Finance Minister reiterated that the Teacher Performance Assessment is a mechanism, which allows educators to remain appropriately trained.

Likewise, he noted the tests are not punitive actions but training measures instead.

It must be taken into account that children and teenagers' education is fundamental for the development of a country.

Therefore, the National Agreement session on education issues is essential for shaping one of Peru's most important State policies.

Strikes

On Monday, strikers declined to sign an agreement with the Education Ministry (Minedu), as they refused to go through a performance assessment process.

On the other hand, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has reiterated his full support to Education Minister Marilu Martens, summoned by the opposition-led Congress to account for measures to end ongoing teacher strikes.

At that time, the statesman underlined government actions to improve public school teachers' working conditions.
