Peru —as UN Security Council Chair— is working for a political solution to the conflict in Syria, as well as the protection of civilians in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law, the Foreign Affairs Ministry affirmed on Saturday.

The Peruvian Government expressed its deepest concern over the recent events in Syria and called for moderation in order to avoid actions that put peace and international security at risk.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Peru condemns the use of chemical weapons and believes that any response —to these heinous crimes— must comply with international law.

Thus, the Andean nation supports the deployment of an investigative mission of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to Syria.

Likewise, it urges the UN Security Council to establish a system that allows the identification and prosecution of those responsible.

Finally, the Inca country backs the UN Secretary-General's willingness to contribute its good services, as well as deems necessary and urgent to establish a mechanism aimed at attributing responsibilities on the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
