Retail trade expanded 4.2% in June 2017, compared to the same month last year, mainly boosted by the greater home appliance and hardware sales, Peru's Production Ministry (Produce) informed.
The expansion was also driven by the commercial activity generated by
Father's Day.
Production Minister Pedro Olaechea expects the said upward trend —seen since January 2015— to continue in the coming months.
According to the government official, the growth was also underpinned by higher sales of books, newspapers and stationery items (7.2%); drug stores (3.5%); as well as department stores and supermarkets (2.9%).
Department Stores
As per department stores and supermarkets, food accounted for 29.4% of total retail sales, whereas footwear and clothing made up 26.1% and 17.4%, respectively.
Likewise, sales of books, newspapers, and stationery saw a 7.2% rise, driven by the opening of new shops in 2016.
In addition, bookstore products stood out as well, as their sales rose 15.3% over the last 12 months.
