The United Nations (UN) New York headquarters hosted the high-level dialogue "Oceans, Overfishing and Sustainable Gastronomy," an initiative promoted by Peru's Permanent Mission to the intergovernmental organization.

The activity was a side-event to the UN Ocean Conference, a 5-day partnering for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development."

Following on the Peruvian initiative that led to the designation of June 18 as "Sustainable Gastronomy Day," the event was led by Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, Peru's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The dialogue also involved Italian and Thai Permanent Missions to the UN, and was co-sponsored by UNESCO, FAO, UNEP, UN Global Compact and Slow Food International.

In this sense, Deputy Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Hector Soldi stressed the need to adopt sustainable production and consumption patterns and —above all— to foster the consumption of non-overfished species.

Soldi, who also heads the national delegation at the Ocean Conference, underlined Peruvian gastronomy as an example of good practices, including various initiatives to safeguard marine biodiversity and ecosystems.

Such efforts seek to raise further awareness about the relation among fishing, culture and sustainable consumption, the Deputy Minister explained.

Echoing this point, Ambassador Meza-Cuadra highlighted the sustainable management of Peruvian anchovies and its contribution to hunger eradication.
