Peru presides over UN Security Council open debate on sexual violence in conflict

17:44 | New York (U.S.), Apr. 17.

The UN Security Council, under the Presidency of Peru, on Monday held an open debate on preventing sexual violence in conflict through women's empowerment, gender equality, and access to justice.

It must be noted the topic was supported by around 70 Member States, whose representatives delivered speeches during the debate.

This way, Peru reaffirms its commitment to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, whose priority is the fight against sexual violence in conflicts —where the Security Council has a fundamental role to play in terms of prevention.

The debate was chaired by Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, Permanent Representative of the Inca country to the United Nations since October 2013.

Peru underlined that women's empowerment and gender equality have a direct impact on the maintenance of peace and security, but also that defense and promotion of women's rights reduce their vulnerability.

Finally, the meeting highlighted the need to ensure perpetrators of sexual violence are brought to justice, as well as to remove all obstacles to investigation and prosecution of rape and other forms of sexual violence.

As is known, non-permanent member Peru took over the UN Security Council Presidency earlier this month.
