Reconstruction works in areas ravaged by Coastal El Niño disasters will lead to a significant increase in investment activity all over the country, Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski affirmed on Thursday.

As is known, Peru was hit hard by Coastal El Niño in the January-March period. The weather event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, leaving many citizens homeless.

"A long night is coming to an end, and things have started to change. We had inherited a tough situation, coupled with Coastal El Niño, politics, revenge and the inability to reach agreements that foster the country's development. [However], I've noticed this is coming to an end," the President said.

Peru's top official underscored the soundness of the two-and-a-half-year reconstruction plan, prepared in coordination with municipalities and regional governments of the country's northern and southern areas.

The plan is to upgrade 7,500 km of highways, 46,000 social dwellings, drainage and sewage pipes, roads along Piura, Catacaos, Chiclayo, and Trujillo cities, as well as towns across Huancavelica.

The Head of State also expressed optimism over the country's economic rebound after the unlocking of large-scale projects.

Finally, Mr. Kuczynski reiterated the Government's pledge to unlock major projects like Jorge Chavez International Airport, the Majes irrigation project in Arequipa, as well as networking projects across the Amazon and other regions.
