Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday called for firm and decisive steps to build a society where men and women are equally respected.

During the award ceremony of Women's Order of Merit 2018, he said there is a long way to go, but the country must move forward demonstrating its commitment to reaching such goal.

Held at Lima's Government Palace, the ceremony honored seven women who stood out in different aspects for their commitment to defending women's rights and promoting equality at a national level.

"This is the most important award conferred by the Peruvian State. I would like to express the Government's gratitude for your work and the work of women across the country," he stated.

Besides this recognition —he pointed out— the country should focus on what needs to be done to give women the place they deserve in society.

"Start valuing and respecting women at home to demonstrate their value in society," the Peruvian leader said after noting his wife's (Maribel Diaz) contribution to the family.

According to Mr. Vizcarra, this State decoration recognizes the role of a group of women who stood out in their respective fields.

The challenge now lies in reducing violence rates and ensuring women's integrity.

The ceremony was attended by Women and Vulnerable Populations Minister Ana Maria Mendieta.
