Represented by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property (Indecopi), Peru participated in the preparatory Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum meetings held in Viet Nam.

At the event, Indecopi officials presented Peru's progress in terms of competition starting with the Leniency Program implementation.

Said program is part of the commitments undertaken by APEC economies to promote structural reforms, thus improving competition levels for markets and benefitting consumers.

Peru also participated in the workshop on simplified business registration aimed at boosting the economy, which took place in the last week of August.

At the APEC meeting, the Competition Policy and Law Group (CPLG) —led by Peru— announced the training of officials from related agencies and future efforts with the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) in this sense.

Projects on competition policies —under evaluation for approval by APEC bodies— were also discussed on the occasion.

Proposals

On the other hand, proposals to boost integration and economic growth were also addressed, given that several countries are facing a slow recovery from the global financial crisis.

As an alternative for overcoming this situation, the use of technology (e-government) was proposed.

The measure could improve and facilitate administrative processes at various public entities and reduce transaction costs by systematizing procedures.

In this regard, good practices such as the virtual method for company formation in Estonia and Papua New Guinea, as well as the use of simplified procedures to register a company in Mexico and the United States, were highlighted.

APEC

APEC seeks to promote trade and investment liberalization, facilitate business and boost economic cooperation, in order to achieve prosperity.

The bloc is composed of: Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; People’s Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Republic of Korea; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States; and Viet Nam.
