Peru: Pardoned ex-president Fujimori released from hospital

13:40 | Lima, Mar. 30.

Peru's former President Alberto Fujimori on Friday left the hospital where he was being treated since Wednesday for severe dehydration caused by gastroenterocolitis.

Seating in a wheelchair, the ex-leader left Centenario Clinic —in Lima's Pueblo Libre district— and got into a van parked outside a few minutes before 10:00 AM (local time).

Fujimori did not address the press. In fact, his sons were not present at the time of his discharge.

The 79-year-old former leader was admitted to the health center's intermediate care unit to undergo a rehydration treatment, his personal doctor Alejandro Aguinaga affirmed.

According to Aguinaga, Fujimori's stomach problem may be caused by contaminated food.

On the other hand, the public confrontation between Keiko and Kenji Fujimori could have affected their father's health as well.

In fact, this was believed to be the reason why he was hospitalized last Wednesday.

As is known, former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski granted a humanitarian pardon to Fujimori on Christmas Eve last year.

The decision cleared Fujimori —who ruled the country between 1990 and 2000— of convictions for human rights crimes before completion of a 25-year prison sentence announced in 2009.
