Peru names preliminary 24-man squad for 2018 World Cup

11:38 | Lima, May. 16.

The Peruvian Soccer Federation (FPF) on Wednesday announced Peru's preliminary 24-man squad for next month's FIFA World Cup in Russia.

It must be noted neither Claudio Pizarro nor Cristian Benavente have been included in Gareca's Peru plans.

According to Peruvian soccer team manager Antonio Garcia Pye, coach Ricardo Gareca submitted the preliminary roster to FIFA last Saturday.

On the other hand, the final 23-man squad list —required by FIFA— shall be finalized on June 4 at the latest.

As is known, Peru —last November— managed to qualify for a World Cup tournament after 36 years.

The Incas earned a place at the sporting mega-event after defeating New Zealand in the qualifying playoffs.

Nevertheless, the national team captain and top striker Paolo Guerrero will miss the FIFA's flagship event as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has recently increased his doping ban from 6 to 14 months.
