Peru: La Libertad, Cajamarca led gold output in 1Q 2018

08:30 | Lima, May. 4.

La Libertad and Cajamarca stood out as Peru's largest gold-producing regions in the first quarter of 2018, private-run National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE) informed.

According to the SNMPE, these two areas accounted for 53% of total national gold output, which reached 28 tons between January and March 2018.

Thus, northern La Libertad and Cajamarca regions registered a production of 8.8 tons and 6.2 tons, respectively. They were followed by Arequipa (5.3 tons) and Ayacucho (3 tons).

As is known, Peru is the largest gold-producing nation in Latin America and the sixth in the world.

The Inca county's gold production amounted to 151 tons in 2017.

Silver

On the other hand, the guild noted silver output reached 1,012 fine metric tons (FMT) in the analyzed period.

Lima topped the list as the largest silver-producing region with 173 tons.

Ancash (163 FMT), Junin (163 FMT), and Pasco (158 FMT) also stood out in this sense.

It must be noted Peru is the second-largest producer of silver in Latin America and around the world, with an accumulated production of 8,679 FMT in the 2016-2017 period.

The current situation of gold and silver mining —both at national and international levels— will be addressed at the 13th International Gold & Silver Symposium taking place in Lima on May 29-31.
