The Governments of Peru and India have successfully concluded the first round of negotiations towards a bilateral trade agreement, the Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) informed on Friday.
Held in New Delhi on August 8-11, the event addressed market access (tariffs), rules of origin, technical trade barriers, as well as sanitary and phytosanitary measures.
Services, movement of people,
investment, customs, trade facilitation, as well as cooperation and institutional matters were also discussed.
Mincetur said the Peruvian party expects to gain preferential access for national products, expediting sanitary proceedings and fostering service exports.
In addition, Peru seeks to attract Indian capitals and facilitate the
bilateral movement of professionals between both nations.
Headed by Mincetur, the national delegation also included representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Economy-Finance, among other public and private institutions.
The eventual
trade agreement with India will open up a market of 1.3 billion people for Peruvian exporters.
Finally, Mincetur anticipated the second round of negotiations with the Asian nation is slated for December this year in Lima.
