The impeachment motion filed against President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski —on the grounds of moral incapacity— was
admitted for Congress debate on Thursday with 87 votes in favor, 15 against, and 15 abstentions. Below is a summary of the voting process.
In the case of Fuerza Popular party, 52 of its 59 lawmakers voted in favor of admitting the motion. Congressman Miguel Elias abstained, while other six were not present.
The votes against came from Peruanos
por el
Kambio (PPK) ruling party, with 15 lawmakers in Parliament including Prime Minister
Mercedes Araoz. The proposal received a unanimous vote from this group.
As per Nuevo Peru, its 10 legislators voted in favor. The same reaction was observed at Accion Popular, where its five congress members backed the request.
Attending legislators from Frente Amplio, APRA, and Alianza por el Progreso (APP) also voted in this sense.
Abstentions came from independent parliamentarians, including former Fuerza Popular's Kenji
Fujimori, as well as ex-PPK members Gino Costa, Vicente Zeballos, and Alberto de Belaunde.
Previous impeachment motion
Back in December, lawmakers voted 93-17 in favor of admitting an impeachment motion, with no abstentions.
Days later, a total of 79 legislators backed the
impeachment, 19 voted against, and 21 abstained.
In order to succeed, the impeachment required 87 votes in favor (two-thirds) out of 130, no matter absences.
