The Peruvian Government projects to save between S/1.8 and S/2 billion (about US$558-US$620 million) by cutting unnecessary expenses, Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva has noted.

At a recent press conference, the official pointed out austerity measures will not halt the operations of any sector within the Executive Branch.

"We consider these expenses are unnecessary at a time when we rely on low public and private investments. Also, current spending has increased," Villanueva told reporters.

"We can't afford to continue like this. We must take measures that will give us (positive) results," he added.

According to the Cabinet chief, most of the cuts will be made in consulting services.

He went on to mention that excessive travel expenses will also be reduced by changing flight ticket purchases from business to economic class, which will enable the State to save a significant amount of money.

Other expenses to be cut include those related to celebrations and even paper use.

Lastly, Villanueva explained all these cuts had been previously assessed.
