The Peruvian Government strongly condemned the use of chemical weapons in Idlib (Syria) that claimed at least 86 innocent lives, including several children.

In a release, the Foreign Affairs Ministry called on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the United Nations Security Council to investigate the facts and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Peru also reiterated "its strong condemnation of the use of chemical weapons, through any actor and under any circumstance, as it constitutes a blatant violation of international law."

The Ministry called the use of such weapons a "war crime," as well as a "threat to international peace and security."

Lastly, the Inca nation —as an OPCW member State and candidate to the UN Security Council for the 2018-2019 period— restates its firm commitment to the complete elimination of chemical weapons, as well as the prohibition of their development, production and storage.
