Fishing sector production grew 280.4% in May 2017 from a year earlier, the highest rate over the past 41 months.

According to Anibal Sanchez, head of National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), the rise is explained by increased anchovy catches, up to 1,215,000 tons.

Figures refer to the second month of the anchovy fishing season in the central-north region of Peru.

Catches of species for direct human consumption increased by 12.86%, driven by larger hauls of species destined for frozen production (68.2%).

On the other hand, a decline was observed in the capture of species destined for cured (-65.4%), canned (-29.2%) and fresh consumption (-7.4%) products.

As is known, Peru's fishing industry advanced 286.12% in November 2013, the highest year-on-year increase ever recorded.
