Peru's fishing sector increased 52% last June over the same month in 2016, Production Minister Pedro Olaechea informed on Tuesday.

In this sense, the sector accumulated three months of continuous growth, thus contributing to the expansion of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

The rise was underpinned by greater catches of hydro-biological resources for indirect human consumption.

"The sector remains one of the economy's main growth engines [...]," Olaechea affirmed.

The positive outcome was also driven by catches of species (+242.7%) sold as frozen products, the official underlined.

Giant squid, prawns, hakes and tuna stood out among the said products.

In terms of volume, landings of hydro-biological resources reached 771,478 tons, mainly led by greater anchovy catches for the fishmeal industry (+81.1%).

Projections

Lastly, Olaechea projected the fisheries sector will grow 65% this year over 2016, boosted by increased anchovy catches for indirect human consumption.
