Peru's farming sector expanded 4.70% in February 2018 compared to the same month last year, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported.
The result was mainly underpinned by agricultural (6.77%) and livestock sub-sectors (2.31%).
In this sense, the agricultural sub-sector was supported by greater production of lemon (53.8%), coffee (39.0%), grapes (23.0%),
cacao (21.3%), paddy rice (16.3%), hard yellow corn (14.3%), sugar cane (4.2%), and potatoes (3.7%).
However, raw cotton (-13.9%) and asparagus (-5.0%) outputs saw declines.
As for the livestock sub-sector, production of pork (3.0%), poultry (2.9%), fresh milk (2.5%), and eggs (1.5%) stood out.
Fishing sector
The
fishing sector grew 5.1% in February 2018 over the same period last year, mainly driven by higher catches of anchovy for indirect human consumption (119.9%).
75,000 tons of anchovy were caught in the analyzed month, compared to the same period in 2017 (34,000 tons).
On the contrary, catches destined for
direct human consumption decreased 3.65%. This result was explained by
lower availability of species destined for canned (-30.9%), frozen (-5.0%), and fresh products (-0.4%).
Nevertheless, hauls of species for cured products increased 16.1%.
