Peru's Justice and Human Rights Minister Maria Soledad Perez Tello urged countries in the region to join forces to combat corruption and terrorist-linked groups.

Speaking from the 45th Meeting of Ministers of Justice of Mercosur and Associated States, the minister expressed concern about actions of groups with alleged ties to Shining Path, such as Movadef, in neighboring countries.

"These activities are intended to surprise democratic governments and promote violence and impunity of their leaders under a false narrative," she warned.

Perez Tello insisted on the cooperation of countries to combat corruption, and recalled Peru and Brazil are working hand-in-hand to clarify probes paid by Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht

"We can tackle challenges together if we are aware the problems in our countries are impunity, corruption, ignorance of law and the need to protect the most vulnerable," she stated.

The Justice head called on Colombia, Chile and other countries to facilitate the transfer of prisoners to their place of origin.

This measure is successfully applied in Peru to address overcrowding prisons and reach inmates to their families.

The minister spoke on Peru's guidelines for fight against corruption, access to justice, modernization of the prison system, and justice management, the latter outlined in the National Agreement for Justice.

Agreements

The Southern Common Market (Mercosur) is composed of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Peru is an associate member along with other nations.

Justice ministers inked, in Buenos Aires, a joint declaration that prioritizes attention to aliens deprived of their liberty in member countries —to female inmates— good justice practices towards female immigrants, protection of personal data, and cooperation in the fight against corruption.

Moreover, Perez Tello and Argentine counterpart German Garavano inked a deal that commits Peru and Argentina to contribute to the resolution of conflicts through conciliation, so that nationals can save time and efforts.
