National Buenaventura Mining Company on Thursday officially opened the Tambomayo processing plant, a US$362-million venture in Tapay district, province of Caylloma (Arequipa region).

The inauguration saw the presence of Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala, Arequipa Regional Governor Yamila Osorio and Tapay Mayor Isidro Llanquecha.
Buenaventura Chair Roque Benavides, as well as various public and private authorities, also attended the event.

Located 7 hours from Arequipa city at a height of 4,800 masl, the facility is set to have a major impact at local, regional and national levels.

"With the new Tambomayo plant, Peruvian mining shows a sign of trust in the country's potential, generating growth opportunities for Arequipa region and Tapay district communities," Buenaventura said.

Output and social contribution

Tambomayo's annual output is estimated at 140,000-160,000 gold ounces. The plant will also produce other metals such as silver and zinc.

Over the 36-month construction period, Buenaventura prioritized local employability, incorporating a significant number of Tapay's population into its workforce following a technical training period.

Tambomayo's 3-year development also entailed works for the benefit of the local community, and has prioritized water access since 2015.

In parallel, Buenaventura has engaged in joint contributions to enhance local school conditions, health service and road infrastructure.
