Peru and Belgium reaffirmed their commitment to free trade and investment promotion within the framework of the 2nd meeting of their Political Consultation Mechanism, held in Lima.

The event featured Peru's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio and Belgium's Foreign Affairs, Foreign trade and Development Cooperation Secretary-General Dirk Achten.

During the meeting, authorities highlighted the values and principles governing both nations in terms of democratic institutionalism, protection of human rights and respect for the rule of law.

Both parties expressed their commitment to free trade, investment promotion and innovation in science and technology, as key pillars of sustainable economic development.

In the economic-commercial domain, they expressed their willingness to work hand-in-hand to boost investment and trade opportunities through the Multiparty Trade Agreement with the European Union and the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) between Peru and Belgium.

Likewise, the gathering addressed topics of common concern included in the multilateral agenda such as human and gender rights, world peace, climate change and fight against drugs.

They also discussed Peru's participation as non-permanent UN Security Council member for the 2018-2019 period.

After the meeting, it was anticipated that Peru's Interior Ministry and Belgian Federal Police will sign a memorandum of understanding in order to develop cooperation mechanisms aimed at fighting organized crime, terrorism, drug trafficking and related offenses.
