Southern Ayacucho has been chosen as the seat of the National Peoples' Art Center in homage to the region's folk art creators, Peru's Culture Minister Salvador del Solar informed on Thursday.

Announcement came during the launch of Ayacucho Waytarin (Ayacucho Blooms, in Quechua) culture-tourism development plan for the said region in which the government official stressed the role of culture in the country's development.

"We, Peruvians, are not just any people. Our country's cultural legacy is like no other; we are one of the few countries that can call itself heir to an ancient civilization," he underlined.

"It is only by appreciating, respecting and learning more about ourselves, as well as by projecting ourselves to the world as the country we have inherited […], that we will be able to grow."

The Culture Head explained the initiative in question will enable the recovery of Huamanga city's historic center as a tourist attraction through public investment projects and other initiatives.

The plan will also involve the promotion of Ayacucho's handicrafts through the National Peoples' Art Center, to have its seat in Huamanga.

"We will reinforce this art type with the support of the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry so that it reaches and shines across the entire country, the Americas and the globe," Salvador del Solar affirmed.

"Such is the relevance of Ayacucho's folk art that it will house Peru's National Peoples' Art Center," he added.

In addition, he referred to the creation of an execution unit to work on Wari and Vilcashuaman archaeological complexes.

Private sector support

Lastly, the official underscored the support of Ayacucho figures and business sphere to the development program.

In this sense, he thanked Carlos Añaños, Ayacucho-born CEO of beverage multinational AJE, for his commitment and contribution to Ayacucho Waytarin.

Similarly, the cabinet member highlighted the involvement of renowned Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez, who offers Ayacucho's children the opportunity to join the youth symphony orchestra.

Minister del Solar joined President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Florez while in Ayacucho.
