A total of 68.8 kilograms of cocaine were detected inside a container intended for shipment from the Peruvian Port of Paita (Piura region) to Belgium, the
After specifying that the drug was identified thanks to the use of state-of-the-art scanners, Sunat indicated that the operation was carried out by specialized teams from the Operational Control Division of the Paita Customs Office.
Among them was the K-9 unit, which, based on profiling techniques and with the support of a portable scanner, detected suspicious images within the structure of a refrigerated container, leading to the shipment being classified as high risk.
The cargo was then inspected using a high-energy fixed scanner, a tool that also identified suspicious images.
Given this evidence, the Sunat customs team, in charge of the controls, reported the discovery to representatives of the Public Ministry and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Special Investigations Division to schedule a physical inspection of the entire container.
In the presence of prosecutors and police, 64 brick-shaped packages were found which, when subjected to the reagent, were determined to contain cocaine alkaloid.
Once the illegal merchandise was weighed, 68.8 kg of drugs were recorded, with an estimated value exceeding US$2 million on the international black market.
