Peru's southern Arequipa region is already gearing up to celebrate its Spanish foundation anniversary in August with a series of activities, including a tourist circuit to climb its emblematic Misti volcano.

In this sense, Arequipa Macro Region Police Director General Walter Ortiz affirmed his office is studying the proposal, which will be duly signaled and will have proper climbing communication gear.

In addition, the route will offer an easy-to-spot shelter for mountaineers. Facilities will be equipped with solar panels, reflective vests and lighting.

Arequipa's Macro Region Police plans to present the project to the Regional Emergency Committee this week with a view to coming anniversary celebrations.

"We want to offer all security conditions," he affirmed.

Security measures

In this respect, General Ortiz advised Misti climbers to take security measures, focusing on food —primarily water— and a fully-charged communication device, since most of the area has cell phone coverage.

Likewise, he stressed it is "quite cold up there" and suggested dressing accordingly, considering special footwear for difficult terrain.

"The staff is properly equipped. We recently received new gear and will soon receive three 4x4 SUVs with adequate climb and rescue equipment," he concluded.
