Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Manuel Hernandez on Monday morning participated in the opening of the 40th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Conference, taking place in Rome on July 3-8.

The biennial international event convenes over 600 high-level government officials and representatives from 194 countries.

In a media advisory, the UN agency reveals participants will debate a number of pressing policy issues related to global food security, including the impacts of climate change on agriculture and efforts to realize the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

The Conference will also review and vote on the FAO Director General's proposed program of work and budget for 2018-19.

On behalf of Peru, Minister Hernandez will present the Inca country's experience in sustainable agriculture for biodiversity, as well as nutrition and food security.

The event will address various issues of particular global relevance, such as efforts to prevent famine in drought- and conflict- affected nations in Africa and the role of rural development in mitigating pressures that are helping drive global migration.
