This year, Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) will come up with a National Action Plan for Coffee, by which the country is expected to reach exports worth US$1 billion in 2018.
According to Minagri's official Juan Risi, the plan involves public policies and encourages investment promotion to enhance coffee production, trade and consumption.
Exports of the country's flagship product will grow 6% from US$756 million (2016) to US$800 million by year-end.
However, the coffee chain's goal is to exceed US$1 billion in sales next year and come close to the record level of 2011 (US$1.65 billion) within the following years.
Public and private sector representatives will join forces to revert the tough situation facing small coffee producers and their organizations as result of climate change impacts, lower international prices, plagues, among other factors.
Minagri and the National Coffee Council suggested actions aimed at strengthening coffee institutions and implementing the National Action Plan along with sector actors.
Actions will be taken at inter-sectoral level to ensure sustainable and competitive development of the industry.
